Thursday Highlights

A packed audience saw Olivia Black chosen as the winner of Thursday evening's class for Songs from the Musicals in the Royal Hall. American born adjudicator Stuart Smith had high praise for her performance of 'Art is Calling For Me' (I want to be a Prima Donna), from Victor Herbert's 1911 Broadway Comic Opera 'The Enchantress', and awarded her 89 marks, just one ahead of Barbara Gale who sang 'Send in the Clowns' from Stephen Sondheim's musical 'A Little Night Music.

For those who are unable to visit the Guild in person, don't forget that Judith Ley presents a nightly round up of results and highlights, including selected performances, at 9 pm on Manx Radio (89 and 97.2m VHF, AM1368, and worldwide at manxradio.com) during the Festival.

Wednesday Highlights

The line up for this year's Cleveland Medal Final was completed yesterday afternoon in the Royal Hall. John Qualtrough (Baritone) will make his first appearance in the Guild's premier competition on Saturday night, and will be joined by 2007 winner Mandy Griffin (Mezzo Soprano) and Glynn Morris (Bass), the winner in 2003 and 2005.

 

Meanwhile, yesterday evening saw Mandy Griffin take the Sydney Myers Trophy when she won the Vocal Solo - British Composers (18 years and over) with an outstanding 92 marks.


Thursday evening in the Royal Hall is the venue for one of the Guild's most popular classes, for Songs from the Musicals (18 and over). The Class has has attracted over fifty entrants this year.

Monday Highlights

It was pianists who took to the stage in the Royal Hall throughout the day on Monday, with Chris Jagus winning three classes, the Open Piano Sight Test, the Piano Solo(16 and Over), and the Open Piano Solo. Eric Kelly won his now annual battle with close friend Geoff Quine to take the honours in the Electronic Keyboard Class.

 

The evening session saw success for Mandy Griffin in the Open Operatic Solo.

 

Monday morning in the Promenade Suite was taken up with the Open Lieder Classes. The winners who will compete in Saturday Night's Final for the F M Cubbon Rose Bowl were Karen Elliott (Soprano), Glynn Morris (Bass), Mandy Griffin (Mezzo Soprano), John Qualtrough (Baritone) and Jane Mayne (Contralto).

 

Amongst the younger competitors, those moving forward to Saturday Night's competition for the Sheffield Plate were Stuart Perks (Winner of the Boys' Solo 6 and under 10), Oliver Mitchell (10 and under 12), Caleb Bester (12 and over), and Hannah Clinton (Girls' Solo 6 and under 9).
